Are Stereotypes Against Arab Women Harmful?

Stereotypes are preconceived notions that limit people and give them functions that are not suited to their powers, as we all know. Whether they are about sex, appearance, or culture, they are dangerous and reductive. They are susceptible to harming the folks they target, especially if they are unintentionally spread through common traditions and the media.

Many in the West, for instance, think that Egyptian women may reside under a severe regime where they are prohibited from working, having opinions, or even leaving their homes. This opinion is based on ignorance and prejudice, and it needs to end!

Additionally, there is a common perception that Arab men are harsh extremists who have harems of adolescent ladies. This picture has been promoted in children’s movies and tv comics. Fear and panic dominated societal media during the coronavirus problems. As a result, jokes became a hot commodity. We analyzed 1424 gags that were posted on Facebook and whatsapp during this time, and we grouped them according to their designs. 508 of them were generally unfavorable and focused on gender. We discovered that the majority of the jokes were rooted in myths about Egyptian women and that they frequently unintentional but still damaging to women’s dignity.
