Nordic Bridal Traditions

When you are getting married in Scandinavia, it’s important to pay attention to some of the edgier traditions. We asked ceremony organizer Mariella Gink to supply us swedish women for marriage the scoop on some of Sweden’s special traditions.

Before spouses in Viking times, the bride may consider a bath to cleanse herself and symbolically clean apart her innocence. Then she would leap into cold ocean to symbolize the change into woman. Her hair was likewise a big deal. She did weave it into elaborate braids to symbolize her masculinity, and the more sophisticated her locks were, the better it boded for the pair. The brides would wear a blouse and shorts made of wool or linen. They may even bring their swords.

In Norse society, it was common for people to give each of their friends home with products. This is a custom that carries on today. It is common to see a gift register at Swedish marriages, but it’s not the norm to obtain significant financial achievements, as most people can afford to get themselves a manifest.

After the ceremony, it’s time to honor! Swedish marriages are known for their extended, elaborate dinner celebrations. The nighttime might include from eight to 12 speeches, screenings of clips from the bachelor and bachelorette parties, games and songs. A friend of the couple is usually designated master of ceremonies to coordinate all the entertainment.

Another quirky Scandinavian wedding tradition is that whenever the groom or bride leaves a room for any reason, other men will line up to kiss them. This is one of our favorite things to capture on camera as a photographer because it’s so funny!
